Sustainability

Kavillo Studios is dedicated to creating a seamless balance between luxury and environmental stewardship.

Our design embraces innovative sustainable practices, from the use of local, natural materials like rammed earth to the unique off-grid systems powered by solar energy and advanced flywheel technology.

With rainwater harvesting, double glazing and thoughtfully designed shading, Kavillo Studios not only minimizes environmental impact but also enhances guests’ experience with the tranquility of a low-impact, natural setting.

Power

To meet our electricity needs, we harnessed renewable energy through solar panels, generating clean, sustainable power. Instead of traditional batteries, we chose flywheels as an innovative storage solution. Flywheels store energy as kinetic energy, spinning at high speeds and converting back to electricity when needed. Unlike batteries, flywheels are highly durable, with no degradation over time, making them a long-lasting and eco-friendly choice.

Water

Water conservation is a priority at Kavillo Studios. Each building collects rainwater, filtered and treated with UV light to ensure it’s safe to drink. With 210,000 liters of storage dedicated to the studios, rainwater is our sole water source. We encourage guests to use it thoughtfully, helping us preserve this precious natural resource.

Rammed Earth

Rammed earth walls, a building technique used for centuries, offer numerous benefits. Known for their excellent thermal mass, they help maintain comfortable indoor temperatures and reduce noise. Their strength, durability, and low maintenance make them highly resilient, while being naturally fire-resistant. Beyond practicality, rammed earth is visually stunning and environmentally friendly.

Climate Control

Each studio features an ‘earth tube’ system, a geothermal setup that naturally regulates indoor temperatures. By drawing air through underground pipes, this eco-friendly system maintains a comfortable 22° Celsius, significantly reducing reliance on air conditioning. This extensive project involved laying 100mm pipes buried 1.5 meters underground for a total of 150 meters for each unit. With double-glazed hardwood timber windows and doors, along with natural rammed earth insulation, these elements exemplify our dedication to energy efficiency and comfort, reinforcing our commitment to sustainable living.

Reforestation

In our dedication to enhancing the natural landscape, we’ve planted over 4,000 trees throughout the property. This reforestation effort not only restores and beautifies the area but also supports local wildlife and promotes biodiversity. Kavillo’s septic system utilizes an enviro-cycle system that recycles wastewater, converting it into irrigation water for our native trees.

Each tree we’ve planted has been grown locally by us from seed or cuttings, symbolising our commitment to a healthier ecosystem. These trees enrich the soil, provide shade, and ensure that Kavillo Studios remains a sanctuary in harmony with nature.

Furnishings

Wherever possible, we’ve chosen natural fibres for our bedding and linens, including 100% cotton, linen, and ethically sourced goose down.

Much of the furniture and fixtures are handcrafted by us. The wall sconces are shaped from recycled brass, the coffee table features a stunning distressed Bathurst Elm slab supported by steel, and the bedside tables are intricately hand-carved from local sandstone. All of these bespoke pieces are available for sale by commission.
